Ulan Bator - now there’s a place that sounds remote and far from home. I conjured up images of dusty roads, horse and carts and a big, busy and rushed city.
I was suprised. The city itself is quite modern but it looks worn. Large avenues, big temples and monasteries, mountain views all around.
We spend a day in the city, wandering around. We visit a monastery that is swarmed with pigeons and visit some markets and shopping malls. In the evening we catcha cultural show with throat singing, dancing and various colourful, Mongolian dresses.
The next day we’re up early and out to see the world’s largest Ghengis (pronnounced Chenngis) Khan statue (and it sure is big) we also get to handle some large birds of prey.
Arriving at Terelj we hike into the forest, hills and mountains whilst others go horse riding.
We spend the evening playing archery, eating dinner and sleeping in Ger tents at -1 degrees celsius! Brr…
The next day we stop in the Black Market. I buy the warmest, wooliest jumper I can.
Tomorrow we’re off to Beijing!
