Day two and three of our short Scandy-break. This was originally written for August 2019.
Starting the day right ☕
It’s a rainy day in Copenhagen. Cindy sleeps in to the sound of rain on the rooftops of our AirBnB, I take a stroll to a nearby coffee shop for black coffee and to try a word or two of Danish.
En sort kaffe, tak!
Clearly I gave the impression that I understood waaay more than those few words, as I was soon out of my depth and asked about my milk and sugar preferences, the weather, and wether-or-not I wanted a take away or a table - or so I assumed as I had no clue about the swathe of words that followed. Smiling and nodding wasn’t going to cut it, so I had to politely interject with “I’m sorry, I don’t speak Danish” and retreat to the table at the back, embarrassed by their perfect English.
Museums 🌧
Today we found ourselves ambling in the rain between museums, coffee shops, markets and attractions. The first stop was the Danish Design Museum.
And navigating the streets we found our way to the Danish National Museum and Christiansborg Slot, the Danish Parliamentary Palace.
The Food 🍰
Smørrebrød for Lunch
Smoo-ur bro-ud?
Trying to pronounce this one is a game unto-itself. Smeer brod? Smore broad? Smoo-ur bro-ud? Whatever, they’re open faced sandwhiches topped with the most delicious toppings: roast pork and apple; pickled herring; or beef tartare.
Luckily we had problems with everyone’s perfect English at getting us through the menu!
Fine Dining for Dinner
Our 1-month wedding anniversary dinner at Restaurant Mes, a delicious and entertaining evening of immaculate food.
Pastries in Between
When I say Danish, you say Pastry. Danish! Pastry!
I can’t think of anything more synonymous with the Danes.
And they have the Scandinavian love of good coffee too!
Kastellet 🏰
Our final day was catching the missed attractions of the rainy day before. The clouds still lingered, so we weren’t keen on being too adventurous.
The Little Mermaid 🧜♀️
How could you visit Copenhagen without saying hello to Ariel. The Little Mermaid statue wasn’t as crowded as my last visit in 2012, I think the rain put a lot of people off.
It’s inspiring to see, and to share the sight with Cindy. It’s a little underwhelming, and I found the park surrounding Hans Christian Andersen’s resting-place to be much more enjoyable.
Christiania 🌳
A mixture of dilapidated buildings, pot-dealers, art installations, and people asking for money.
It’s a sight to see, there’s a creativity and laid-back attitude to the place that’s refreshing.
