Hygge Holiday - Day One

Rise and shine!

Early mornings and Mondays, striking fear into the hearts of stronger men than I. Cindy and I sit bolt upright to our carefully curated alarm calls aimed for maximum annoyance to ensure our 04:30 start. Five hours sleep is not enough, but in a short while we’ll be dining on coffee, bacon and pastries - Danish style.

Taxi. Forgotten phone. Return home. Try again, phone in hand. Taxi. Airport. Check-in. Bag drop. Security. Boarding. 2 hours flight, a short train ride and a little walk, and five flights of stairs and we’re at our AirBnB in Vestebro, Copenhagen.

Phew. 11am and it’s time for bacon.

Recharged at Mad og Kaffe (translated as “food and coffee”). We stroll into town to explore. Walking along Sønder Blvd. to Central Station and Tivoli. Down Strøget and a visit to the Lego shop, it is Danish after all, and exhausted by the time we reach Christiansborg.

A quick walk up to Nyhavn for a shot of the infamous rainbow buildings and a sit down in the sun with a lemonade.

Recharged it’s back off home for a dinner from the supermarket of salt cured salmon, trout roe, sild (pickled herring), and bread - served smørrebrød style (pronounced with great difficulty).

Tired from a long and hot day, we relax on the sofa for some Hygge (pronounced Ho-gga,is the Danish concept of comfort at home). Homemade hot chocolate and a movie on TV with the wife.

Hyggelig.
